Mumblings

I re-found my diary ... urhm ... journal three days ago, not underneath a tree but in the space below my closet gathering dust. It's really an old notebook the size of a large she-wallet. I dunno what came to me that time, but 'twas suppose to be a dream diary ...urhm ... journal (diary are for girls, from now on and then on, it's a journal). The first entries were dated jan 05 '02 (I had more than one dream the first time I decided to journal them down). Entertaining actually, but being the creature of non-habit that I am, the journal slowly mutated and decided to be simultaneously a grocery list, assignment notebook, soccer attendance sheet, a to-dos list, and almost even toilet paper and sometimes a girly diary.

The unpretentious notebook, tattered and with peeling covers, chronicled almost significant moments from 2002 until 2004. Emotional fights with my S.O., material things I would like to possess at that time, ways I can get those material things at that time, things I would like to do to improve myself, notes to self, bits of reflection, they were there.

Reading them again is almost living at those moments especially those notes to self. Writing notes to self started when UP decided I was too good for them. And I could write long, detailed even, notes to self.

With the ~150 pages it has, I guesstimate that there are ~50 blank pages left. And I'm gonna write into it again. I guess writing on paper with a pen is different from typing from a keyboard to a white screen. And most entries on this tattered journal is not interesting for other people. This means I'd rather write it down than blog it.

I mumble.

On a different topic, I recently found out about polyphasic sleeping. I think I'm gonna read more on this and then try it. Quite interesting if you ask me.

Here's how I will prepare: slowly try and be vegetarian or at least cut down big-time on meat, slowly wean myself off coffee(I don't drink a lot so I don't think it would be a problem), stop smoking (Again, I smoke very occasionaly and only when socially significant. Social significance of smoking is subject of an entire blog so I'll just leave the idea on your fertile minds), regularly wake up early.

That's about it for now. I hope this gets interesting enough for me to blog on this.

I'm also thinking of switching blog service provider (if ever there is such a term as blog service provider). The idea of having categories for one's blog entries thrills me (talk about cheap thrills). Thanks for the idea marlon.

Mr. Mild Mannered Programmer

*Update as of June 2006*
   This entry was originally posted on blognironald.blogspot.com. Prior to the url of blognironald.blogspot.com, the original url was the semi-cryptic icedman13.blogspot.com.
*End Update*

According to Blogger.com, I'm a registed user since February of 2004. Let me see, today's the first of March so 2 years times 12 months/year, hmm.. so that's roughly 24 mos. Excluding this entry, I have posted 24 others so, 24 mos. dibaybay 24 blogs, hmm.. carry one then square the result over phi... A blog entry for every month!

I may not be the most frequent poster among bloggers, but guess what? Guess who's google's number one (1) mild mannered programmer on the web. Drum rolls please. drumdrumdrumdrumdrum...

Here is the web's number 1 mild mannered programmer as of March of '06. As of this date, google returned 31,700 results for mild mannered programmers. I may not be the best programmer among the lot, but be assured I'm the mildest and most mannered of them all.

This may seem insignificant to you but months ago, I was like the 23,857th entry for the search term "mild mannered programmer." I can therefore conclude that tips on search engine optimization (SEO) sure worked. So dear friends, keep linking me up.

I see some pros and cons here.

Forgetting my easily rememberable url of http://blognironald.blogspot.com is no more a problem. I can imagine it all now.. *nuninuninuni*

Bored Office Worker: I'm so bored working here in the office that I'm tagged as a Bored Office Worker in this psuedo-script.

Bored Office Worker (Struck by an Idea): Hey! Lemme mosey around and read up on my loser friend's blog I'll probably be thankful I'm bored working in this office as soon as I read up on him. Now what was the URL again? Was it blugnironald? Or was that Blognggwapo? *Tries the various URLs anyway*

Bored Office Worker: Oh shit! Why was I redirected to this pr0n sites!?! But hey, isn't this my highschool classmate? *drools*

After 3 hours and 2 bathroom trips

Satiated-but-still-Bored Office Worker: That should be enough pr0n for me for 2 hours. Gotta focus now and look for that super interesting blog. Let me _google_ for mild mannered programmer...

Satiated-Bored-but-now-Happy Office Worker: Viola! I finally found you. I love you mild mannered programmer but let me get back to my pr0n...

* * * *
Sounds too good, that it's true.

But on the not-so-lighter side of things, being the mildest and most mannered programmer may be too much pressure. I must be spartan in my ways to be able to maintain my mildness and manneredness. I mean, jeez, this popularity could easily get into my head.

Actually, it already have. Let's wait for the repercussions...

Not So Fair Report

I can be sometimes be so unconcerned with what happens around me. This may be due to my being situated at the lowest rung of Maslow's hierarchy. Still looking for that stable supply of wants (food, clothing, shelter) and needs (sex, drugs and alcohol). But let me try and list what important (importance is subjective, what is important to you may be total crap for me and vice-versa) events I remember for at least two weeks ago: stampede at Ultra, landslide at Leyte, UP fair 2006, bird flu pandemic spreading somewhere in Africa, my friend's baby ultrasound pic. The events are not ordered chronologically, I'm trying not to waste brain cycles here.

Anyway Hemmingway before this blog loses all sense for the nth time, I hope you had enough sense to relate the blog's title to one of the events I remembered.

The UP fair this year, like the past fairs, is full of fairness. During the fair time, I always ask friends I meet if they have been to the fair. Out of 12.75 persons I asked, 9.34 said they have been to the fair, and 5.12 of the 9.34 had been there more that once. (The decimal portion of the numbers stated resulted from a complex calculation which includes the number of persons and their BMI, that's body mass index for you).

Bits for trivia gleaned from people from the fair: Kamikaze of the UP fine arts was there and apparently, after years of searching is still looking for their slippers. They performed twice during the week performing their new single Narda (The logic here is if you don't find your slippers, go look for Darna.) Ely Buendia was there with his new band Pupils. I was told the band performed at around 5.30am of Thurday still from Wednesday's act. Hale and Cueshe was there. I really don't know what's wrong with them but there seem to be some underground movement detesting these bands. Eraserfest was the theme during the Fair's friday schedule. Fortunately it didn't rain which means the chances of the bands dying from equipment electrocution went down to 12.74% (I really like putting personally calculated statistical digits here, I feel smarter everytime I whip out numbers like that). The fence didn't breakdown this time keeping the balara kids and krus-na-ligas gang at bay (informal settlers who setup camp indefinitely around the outskirts of UP campus).

On the darker side of things, there were news of a kid's death due to fair related activity. This was not cause by mosh pit induced aggression. He wasn't stabbed or stampeded. I guess you could say he died in his sleep. Rumors has it that an SUV backed down on a lying child on the field. They said the child was sleeping. I didn't care enough to get more details.

None of these were first-hand experiences because I wasn't there.

Damn work.

UP fair 2006

I'm remember saying to myself that I will regularly blog. Well, technically speaking, blogging once every two months still counts as regular.

I have nothing to say for now except that the day of sex ...ehrm... commercialized love is again, just days away. Yep, valentine's day.

I'm just glad that me and my significant other (S.O.) has transcended such commercialism and pressure to celebrate that day as the society expects couples to do (which is buy/give expensive gifts, eat at an expensive/romantic resto, and consummate earthly desires at home and/or at a seedy motel). A cup of coke may be less expensive than a glass of red wine. Graham crackers are not pasta. But conversations are always intimate regardless of place and food between two people fond of each other (I'm trying to avoid the cheesy and overused word love here). So dear S.O., this is not an excuse for not going out, to probably full restos, but a reminder that we're beyond that. So prepare yourself for coke and grahams at Aling Nene's Sarisari store on tuesday. (I hope it didn't come off as an obvious excuse for a totally unplanned 14. Ooops, it just did)

UP fair is next week!

I've been to the Diliman fair from '98 until '00. On a totally unrelated issue (for now), I'm sure you know UP has been getting lots of freshmen students every year and not so lots of graduates every year. If this goes on every year, UP would be so full of students that the administration would be out of budget to give the so-called quality UP education.

That's where the UP fair comes in.

From what I remember, UP fair is celebrated the whole 2nd week of February. With different daily band lineups from the popular bands, rising bands and unheard of bands, with alcohol served at low prices, and with a cover charge of only ~50 (this was years ago, I heard it's around 85 this time), who would have the energy to go back to school after having fun nightly at fair? Incidentally, the school mandates that the 2nd sems midterms exams are scheduled on the same week.

See the logic so far? Irrestible, affordable, fun gimik at the same time as the exams means high rate of flunking students. Flunking students gets kicked off UP. Student body population shrinks to absorb next year's freshmen. Genius.

Call this a ridiculous conspiracy theory, but they got me this way.

This time, with my computer-genius certifacte a.k.a. diploma now present and safely tucked under my bed, nothing's gonna stop me from fairing every night. O wait, there's work. Naaah..

See you at the fair!

Obligatory Pacquiao Article

What else is there to blog at this moment? I was actually involved in a near death experience yesterday (Watching AXN's extreme disasters on tape constitutes as involvement), but this experience pales in comparison with Tito Manny's win over Morales.

When else was there an event where political rivals shook hands, where people crowded the streets to stop traffic, where people gathered and claimed to pray together for a purpose, where evil doers (rapist/murderers/jaywalkers) were quickly rounded up and summarily executed? (Oh wait, I don't think the last one happened yesterday) Almost sounds like a successful EDSA revolution doesn't it?

I guess for a country supposedly full of problems and situations, we welcome these kind of news. News of the good kind. The kind that would give most people bragging rights. For example; IF Manny Pacquiao=World Class Boxer and Manny=Pinoy and Me=Pinoy THEN Me=World Class Boxer SO You=give money to Me or else; IF Manny=hardworking,disciplined and Manny=Bisaya (Lives in Southern Philippines) and Me=Bisaya EVEN IF Me=like porn Me=hardworking,disciplined too. The possibilities are endless...

* * * * *
He's uber-rich now. Millions in fight prizes, product endorsements, ad space on his butt, and geez, even a singing career.

I'm a fan of Manny, as a boxer that is. But as someone who sings? Geez.

I wonder who first thought of this idea? I guess some record company wants to get a piece of that flow of money. Here in the philippines, once you're very popular, you could do anything, sing, dance, host shows and *gasp* even act and star in film. (Manny had a movie didn't he?)

Well, he has this song that's gaining lots of airplay entitled, Para sa iyo translated as For you. The first time I heard this song, I could almost imagine how they recorded the song. Manny Pacquiao seated with friends around, a microphone on Manny's left hand, platitos (small plates) of salted peanuts on the table, ash-trays with few stick of lit cigarettes, round of beer. If you imagined a videoke session with friends, that's how I think they did the shoot. Sing with me now; "Para sa'yo(This is for you).. Ang laban na'to (The second fight 'ang laban na two')."

* * * * *

Imagine if Manny runs for office in his hometown. I bet he'd win. One, he's uber-wealthy and some say very kind. Two, he's very popular(Very Important in Politics!) and three, he's got insane punching power. Now what has punching power got to do with politics? I actually imagine hime saying this during his campaign; "Kung ako bobotohin nyo, Uumbagin ko ang lahat ng politikong corrupt!" Now that's a threat with a bite.

* * * * *

If anything as shallow as a Pacquiao boxing win could bring about change in our country, bring it on!

Knock me another one Mister Pacquiao.
